L22: 4P's Promotion

Revision and practice on the purpose and value of promotion and the promotional mix.

Key vocabulary: Sales Promotion, Sponsorship, Social Media, Promotional Mix

Key Concepts

What Is Promotion?

Promotion is the primary communication tool of the marketing mix. Its core purpose is to inform, persuade and remind target audiences about a product or brand. Its value lies in driving brand awareness, generating immediate sales, and building long-term customer loyalty in a competitive market.

Advertising

Advertising is a paid form of communication that aims to inform, persuade or remind customers about a product, service or brand — through TV, radio, print, outdoor (billboards/posters), search engine ads, social media, display/banner ads and video advertising.

Social Media & Influencer Marketing

Instead of advertising directly, a business can pay an influencer to promote its product to their own audience, chosen based on the influencer's reach, niche and budget.

Types: mega-influencers (1m+ followers), macro-influencers (100k–1m), micro-influencers (10k–100k).

Benefits: targeted reach, builds trust and credibility, high engagement, measurable results.

Drawbacks: reputational risk, lack of control over the influencer's content, and disclosure regulations — influencers must clearly mark sponsored posts (e.g. #Ad or #Gifted), with legal consequences for both influencer and brand if they don't.

Sales Promotion

Sales promotions are short-term incentives designed to boost sales quickly. Unlike advertising, which builds long-term awareness, sales promotions aim to trigger an immediate purchase decision.

Examples: price reductions and discounts, BOGOF and multi-buy offers, free samples and trials, competitions and prize draws.

Value: boosts short-term sales quickly, useful for clearing old stock, and encourages customers to try a product.

Sponsorship

Sponsorship is a paid partnership between a business and an event, team, organisation or individual — sports, arts and culture, broadcast, or community/charity sponsorship.

Benefits: builds brand awareness by reaching audiences in contexts where they're engaged and receptive, and creates positive brand associations by linking a business to popular or aspirational properties.

Drawbacks: expensive, and risky — for example, a sponsored team or individual being involved in a scandal can damage the sponsor's own reputation.

Influences on the Promotional Mix

The combination of promotional methods a business chooses (its "promotional mix") is shaped by: the promotional budget available; the stage of the product life cycle; the type of product; characteristics of the market; and competitor activity.

Real-World Case Studies

Premier League shirt sponsorship — a real, huge-value promotional method

Premier League shirt sponsorship is worth around $309 million across the league in the 2025/26 season. Liverpool's front-of-shirt deal has been valued at £65.9 million for 2025, while smaller clubs' deals are worth far less — Sunderland's fair market value is estimated at £10.2 million. The Premier League's clubs have also agreed to voluntarily remove gambling sponsors from the front of shirts from the 2026/27 season, needing to replace an estimated £60–80 million in annual revenue this creates — a real example of how sponsorship deals, and the rules around them, are constantly evolving as a promotional method.

UK influencer marketing — a fast-growing part of the promotional mix

The UK influencer marketing industry is projected to reach £2.9 billion in 2026, up from £2.36 billion in 2024, making the UK the largest influencer marketing market in Europe. 81% of UK brands say they plan to increase their influencer marketing budgets in 2026, and 14% of UK brands already spend more than £1 million a year on it. This growth shows a real, measurable shift in how UK businesses are splitting their promotional mix — putting a growing share of budget into influencer-led social media promotion rather than only traditional advertising.

A*/A Stretch

Examiner's eye

Top-band answers on promotion always link the method chosen back to the target audience and the objective — e.g. a business targeting Gen Z with a brand awareness objective would likely favour influencer marketing over TV advertising, since it reaches that audience where they already spend time, at a lower cost per person reached.

Common misconception

A bigger promotional budget doesn't automatically mean better results — the fit between the method and the target audience matters more than spend alone. A well-targeted micro-influencer campaign can outperform a much more expensive mass-media advert if it reaches the right audience more precisely.
