L13: Marketing Objectives

Revision and practice on marketing objectives and the internal and external influences on them.

Key vocabulary: Lead Generation, Customer Retention, Brand Awareness, Marketing Budget, Conversion Rate

Key Concepts

What Are Marketing Objectives?

Marketing objectives are specific goals that the marketing function sets to guide its activities. They give direction to marketing decisions and reflect the interrelationship between marketing and other functions — operations must deliver the demand generated, finance funds the activity, and HR resources the team. Like all good objectives, they must be SMART.

Example marketing objectives: sales growth; market share; brand awareness; customer retention (e.g. reduce customer churn rate by 10%).

Digital-Era Marketing Objectives

Beyond the core objectives above, businesses may also focus on newer digital-era marketing objectives that reflect how customers interact with brands today:

  • Lead generation — mainly used in B2B marketing
  • Engagement — interactions such as likes, shares, comments
  • Conversion — turning website visitors, app users or social media followers into paying customers
  • Customer lifetime value — the total value a customer is expected to bring over the whole time they stay a customer

Real-World Case Studies

Aldi — a rebrand aimed squarely at a brand awareness objective

In September 2025, Aldi UK carried out what's reported as the most significant branding overhaul in its history, as part of a marketing push focused on brand awareness and customer engagement rather than short-term price promotions. In the first half of 2025 this approach delivered double-digit growth in engagement on Instagram and TikTok. Alongside this, Aldi has used weekly limited-availability "product drops" — creating scarcity and urgency, since items sell out and don't return — to help meet a separate objective of driving repeat footfall and customer retention. This shows a real business pursuing two distinct, clearly identifiable marketing objectives (brand awareness and retention) with two different tactics.

easyJet — balancing awareness and acquisition objectives

easyJet's marketing strategy splits its budget between sustaining broad brand awareness (through high-impact TV and out-of-home advertising at major European hubs) and more targeted digital activity aimed at customer acquisition and ancillary revenue (extra paid add-ons like seat selection or baggage). In 2025, easyJet reported that personalisation through its "Flight Club" loyalty scheme helped increase ancillary conversion by around 20%. This shows a real airline pursuing multiple marketing objectives — brand awareness, acquisition and conversion — simultaneously, each requiring a different part of the marketing mix.

A*/A Stretch

Examiner's eye

Strong answers link a marketing objective directly back to the business's wider corporate objectives, rather than treating marketing as isolated — e.g. "a corporate objective of rapid growth would likely lead to a marketing objective focused on customer acquisition and market share, rather than retention."

Common misconception

"Increase sales" alone is not a well-written marketing objective — it's missing the SMART elements. A stronger version specifies a measurable target and timeframe, e.g. "increase online sales by 12% within the next financial year."

Try This With AI

Before using this: AI tools can get facts or mark scheme details wrong, and quality varies by tool. Always check anything factual against your notes or ask your teacher.

Give me a short business scenario and ask me to write one SMART marketing objective for it, then identify one internal and one external influence that might affect that objective. Mark my objective specifically against the SMART criteria, not just generally.
